Max recently made a visit to the Alex Singer workshop in Paris, where he was lucky enough to be given access to the workshop floor and permitted to take some photos.
“Few workshops in the world can lay claim to the heritage and sheer sense of tradition upheld by Cycles Alex Singer. The brand is legendary. The bikes have held their reputation as the finest money can buy for over 70 years. Even now, the frames constructed by Olivier (pictured here), the third frame builder in the Alex Singer line, are as stunning as any you will see at NAHBS or at any of the bike shows around the world.
The workshop is located in the northern Parisian suburbs, less than 30 minutes by Metro from the Eiffel Tower. The workshop has a welcoming showroom displaying lots of bikes and selling some hard to find parts for touring and audax. If you’re especially lucky they will let you into the back room where, if memory serves, they have been building frames for over 50 years.”
We love the sense of living history that these photographs depict: The damaged and worn walls of the workshop, the pictures torn from magazines and pinned to the walls, the stacks of tools, the geometry drawings on the cork board… They all bear witness to the ongoing work, the continuity, the ongoing heritage, the living essence that keep Cycles Alex Singer building these classic machines. Long may it continue.
