You can never overestimate the impact of a good pair of shoes. Whether you're riding in clips and straps, or with SPDs, making sure your feet are happy is going to improve your cycling massively. Cycling shoes have a few important features. Firstly they need to have a stiff sole to make sure all the pressure you apply with your feet is transferred to the pedal. Many SPD shoes have venting to keep you cool in the summer, or weatherproofing for the winter, where as cycling specific trainers tend to have reinforced toe caps and reflective areas for safety and longevity when riding with clips and straps. Whilst all these features are huge improvements over regular shoes, still the most important thing to get right is the fit!
