The Wide Open is our do everything road bike, or a Audax bike as it used to be called. Racy geometry and lightweight Columbus Zona tubing will keep the rider entertained at the weekends on longer rides. When it comes to winter commuting the space for larger tyres and guards will keep you dry and comfy. Finally, load up some panniers, bolt on a rack and head off for a weekend touring.
This is our shop-built Wide Open, exactly what we'd want when building a do-everything bike for touring, long distance riding, lazy Sundays and a bit of canal gravel track too. The Shimano 105 groupset is ideal for this purpose, maintaining the smooth shifting and light weight of the racing groupsets, without sacrificing toughness. The Ambrosio Excellence wheelset are a perfect aesthetic match, low-profile silver box rims laced to Ambrosio's own racing hubs. These Ambrosio hubs are gorgeous high flange affairs, with sealed bearing against the weather. We've decided to shoe these wheels in Japanese handmade tyres, these gumwalled Panaracers are smooth rollers for gorgeous road, but are also designed to glide over gravel track or rough terrain.
To finish off a decent build, we've opted for a full silver Nitto finishing kit, which is a great match for the steel frame but without sacrificing any performance; over-sized bars and an A-head stem to maintain the stiffness and comfort of the Nitto Randonneur bars. On top of that, a beautiful new Brooks Swift and brown Brooks bartape is a beautiful compliment to the Racing Green of the frame, and a when broken in, the saddle will last you a lifetime.
This is a perfect bike for long riding, rolling hills and light touring. We've got a 540mm build in our Soho store for test rides and appreciation, but we're happy to build up any size Wide Open you would like.
