We were asked to take part in the Nike Tied Together marathon to help battle AIDS with the (RED) charity. The marathon was a LeMans 24hr style affair with teams made up from collectives and companies around the city. Each team had to provide a T-shirt design for the racers to wear during the event and theme for the shirt had to be the colour red. Instantly, the thought of bikes and the colour red made us think of Akira and Kaneda’s iconic red motorbike. This became the basis of our T-shirt design and we recreated one of the Akira film posters, replacing Kaneda’s red motorbike jacket with the garb of a Japanese bicycle messenger, and the motorbike with a disc wheeled track bike.
The T was very well received and we were then given the opportunity by Nike to build the bike for their Tied Together show. Obviously we jumped on the opportunity to bring the bike from our design to life. This is boyhood-dream comic book stuff. We had a very short turnaround of two weeks to produce the goods and Ricky Feather stepped up to the mark, working flat out to build the frame which included the webbing from the design. We had to beg, borrow (but never steal) every part we could to create the effect we were looking for and Death Spray Customs then worked his magic on the paintjob, including the decals and sponsor badges. It was all coming together and looking pretty exciting so we thought it would be a good idea to capture the build on timelapse and give the project some of the drama that we felt it deserved.
Everyone really pulled out the stops on this project and so a big thanks to Death Spray Custom, Ricky Feather & our comic book man Babycrow for helping us make this happen in two weeks!
